We have committed to lower emissions through the Chicago Climate Exchange
In 2004, Green Mountain Power joined the Chicago Climate Exchange, a legally binding multi-sector market for reducing and trading greenhouse gas emissions. Green Mountain Power is the first electric utility in the Northeast to join the CCX. We have voluntarily committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by four percent below our 1998-2001 baseline average by 2006. Participating in the CCX gives us the mechanism to reach our goals by buying CO2 credits if we can't reduce our emissions adequately through the power we generate or purchase, or selling them if we exceed our goal. The CCX will encourage the development of low-emission resources in the most cost-effective manner. For more information visit www.chicagoclimatex.com.
Environmental Policies
Renewable fuels make up the largest energy source for Green Mountain Power. These fuels are better for the environment, produce fewer emissions, and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. The chart below shows you exactly how we derive the power that keeps you "on everyday."
Because of a decreased dependence on oil, our prices are stable and our service is reliable. And you can feel good knowing that the power generated in Vermont is in the top ten nationwide for renewability.

Green Mountain Power has been recognized as a leader in the production of wind energy in cold climates.
Vermont lives up to its green reputation
Green Mountain Power proudly contributes to our state's excellent record of low emissions per megawatt hour of power generation.
- Renewable Energy Credits (REC) were sold for a portion of the energy generated at Green Mountain Power's wind facility in Searsburg. Energy associated with the RECs is 0.5% of the total energy in 2005 and is included in the market purchases figure.
Green Mountain Power appreciates the natural environment in which we all work and live. Vermont truly is a green and healthy place.
That's why we have written an environmental policy to guide us. Like you, we are committed to preserving and protecting our environment for ourselves, for all of our children, and for generations to come.
As a company, we pledge to:
- Be a leader in our industry in providing clean, renewable energy resources.
- Develop products and services that help you, our customer, protect the environment.
- Improve our environmental performance continuously.
- Prepare periodic reports to assess our environmental programs.
- Meet or exceed the requirements of all environmental laws, regulations, and permits.
- Promote the efficient use of energy and other resources in the workplace and in homes.
- Inform ourselves about our suppliers and products we buy and whether they protect the environment, public health, and public safety.
- Educate employees and you, our customer, about environmentally sound practices.
- Manage company-owned lands and natural resources through sustainable practices.
- Ensure that each employee recognizes his or her responsibility to our overall environmental performance.
- Help each employee consider the environmental impact of his or her everyday business decisions.
